Overwintering population of Cercopagis is represented by resting eggs which hatch generally in May. Although representatives of the first parthenogenetic generation (the spring form individuals) differ morphologically from individuals of the subsequent generations (the summer form individuals) and could be keyed to a separate species -Cercopagis (Apagis) ossiani -our analysis confirm that there is only one Cercopagis species in the Gulf of Riga: Cercopagis pengoi. Notable seasonal dynamics was observed for the gamogenetic mode of reproduction, being strongly associated with the total population density. Gamogenetic females develop since the end of June and reach the maximum absolute abundance in July whereas their proportion is generally the highest in fall. The gamogenetic absolute fecundity drops to the lowest level late July but increased afterwards until the late August. One resting egg was, an average, found in 45.4%, two in 53.4% and three in 1.2% of females. Parthenogenetic fecundity was significantly higher in May-June compared to other months studied. Brood pouch of parthenogenetic females was found to contain 11.6 ± 1.0 and 10.2 ± 0.3 embryos in the spring and summer form individuals, respectively. Variation in the two modes of reproduction and fecundity is probably solely not controlled by temperature, but also by food availability and population density.

The predatory impacts of Cercopagis pengoi, a planktivorous cladoceran first observed in Lake Ontario in 1998, were assessed by examining patterns in the distribution and population dynamics of macrozooplankton. Specifically, we determined the vertical distribution of C. pengoi in Lake Ontario with respect to other zooplankton species and possible biotic and abiotic controlling factors and used seasonal time series of potential prey species, both before and after C. pengoi invasion, to make inferences about predatory impacts of C. pengoi. The highest abundances of C. pengoi generally occurred at the bottom of the epilimnion or at the top of the metalimnion, and strong diel vertical migration was not observed. The vertical distribution of cyclopoid and calanoid nauplii and copepodids was deeper in 1999 than had historically been observed, which suggest possible avoidance of C. pengoi or localized predatory depletion. Seasonal analyses of normalized biomass size spectra from the Bay of Quinte supported an impact of C. pengoi on organisms Ͻ0.1 g dry weight. The hypothesized predatory effect on juvenile copepods was supported by an analysis of seasonal time series, where we observed that high abundances of C. pengoi coincided with marked decreases in these groups. Consequently, the presence of C. pengoi likely decreases the production of juvenile copepods both through direct predation and through a shift of copepod vertical distribution to colder waters. Among the cladocerans, only Bosmina longirostris abundance declined in the presence of C. pengoi in the analysis of seasonal time series.

Carbon mass of the non-indigenous predatory fishhook water flea Cercopagis pengoi (Ostroumov, 1891) from the eastern Gulf of Finland, the Baltic Sea, was for the first time measured using the high temperature combustion method. Prior to the analysis, individual dry weight of Cercopagis was determined; altogether ca. 500 organisms were examined. Mean individual dry weight of C. pengoi for July-September was estimated as 34.0 µg; carbon mass averaged 15.8 µg; carbon content, calculated as percent of dry weight, averaged 43.4%. Those values varied over months, mainly because of different population structure of C. pengoi and variation in their diet due to seasonal dynamics of the food objects. However, relations between carbon mass and dry weight for different months did not differ statistically (p<0.001). Therefore, the general polynomial regressions (k=2), describing carbon mass-to-dry weight and carbon content-to-dry weight relationships, were calculated for the entire dataset of individual measurements of C. pengoi body metrics. These data will contribute to adequate evaluation of food web structure and ecosystem alterations in various water bodies invaded by C. pengoi which has got a strong potential to pelagic food web transformations that may impact the overall energy balance and decrease the size of fish stocks.
