Comparative Ecology of Bartonella and Brucella Infections in Wild Carnivores

Abstract: Phylogenetic sister clades Bartonella and Brucella within the order Rhizobiales present some common biological characteristics as well as evident differences in adaptations to their mammalian reservoirs. We reviewed published data on Bartonella and Brucella infections in wild carnivores to compare the ecology of these bacteria in relatively similar host environments. Arthropod vectors are the main mechanism for Bartonella species transmission between mammalian hosts. The role of arthropods in transmission of B… Show more

“…3 ; Clade G and K). Bartonella rochalimae is the second most prevalent clade in wild carnivores and can also be found in domestic cats and dogs and their vectors ( Bai et al, 2016 ; Fleischman et al, 2015 ; Frye et al, 2015 ; Gerrikagoitia et al, 2012 ; Henn et al, 2009 ; Kosoy and Goodrich, 2019 ; Saisongkorh et al, 2009 ; Schott et al, 2019 ). Akodon is known to be preyed on by carnivores in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest ( Facure et al, 2003 ; Gatti et al, 2006b , 2006a ; Santos et al, 2003 ).…”

“…Transmission of Brucella spp. is via contact exposure to infected animals or by environmental contamination with infected fluids, although a number of studies have suggested the possibility of arthropod-borne transmission (Kosoy & Goodrich, 2018). As with Leptospira spp., it is likely that ticks fed on an infected dog and again we are detecting the blood meal.…”

“…In addition, red fox (Vulpes vulpes) is a significant free-ranging carnivore in these areas. Bartonella infection in foxes has been described worldwide (Bai et al, 2016;Chomel et al, 2012;Fleischman et al, 2015;Gerrikagoitia et al, 2012;Hodžić et al, 2018;Kosoy & Goodrich, 2019;López-Pérez et al, 2017;Marciano et al, 2016;Millán et al, 2016;Schaefer et al, 2011;Víchová et al, 2018), whereas it has rarely been reported in wolves from Spain (Gerrikagoitia et al, 2012). Since both wolf and red fox are sympatric with dogs especially feral and rural ones, they may play an important role in the Bartonella ecology (Bateman & Fleming, 2012;Gehrt et al, 2013).…”
