Comparative effectiveness of East Asian traditional medicine for treatment of idiopathic short stature in children

Abstract: Background: There are many East Asian traditional medicine (EATM) therapies that are widely used and effective for idiopathic short stature (ISS) in children. However, the comparative effectiveness of these therapies remains unclear. We describe the methods that will be used to comparatively evaluate the efficacy and safety of EATM therapies for the treatment of pediatric ISS. “…However, since the descriptions of sexual maturity in the included studies were insufficient, it is difficult for us to predict the effect of sexual maturity on the growth outcomes in these studies. Finally, we planned subgroup analysis according to the treatment period in this study's protocol, 17 but subgroup analysis was not possible due to the low number of included studies. In addition, since none of the included studies were evaluated as having a low risk of bias, sensitivity analysis to investigate the robustness of the meta-analysis results was not possible.…”

“…Idiopathic short stature (ISS) accounts for 60%–80% of cases with short stature in children ( Cohen et al, 2008 ). ISS is characterized with a height below the two standard deviations or the third percentile of the normal reference levels for the same ethnic group, gender and age, without chronic systemic, endocrine, nutritional, skeletal diseases or chromosomal abnormalities ( Lee et al, 2020 ). To date, no breakthrough has been made in the field of treatment to improve height in ISS children due to the uncertain etiology.…”

“…However, complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) treatment is often considered despite the following concerns: reluctance to start artificial hormone therapy at an early age, fear of potential side effects, discomfort of getting an injection every four weeks, and poorer outcomes than expected with regards to the improvement of final adult height [ 11 ]. Traditional Korean medicine (TKM) has been used for the treatment of various diseases and is currently one of the most popular CAM [ 12 ] treatments. ICPP, which accounts for the highest percentage of PP and is free from other identifiable diseases, can benefit from TKM [ 11 ].…”
