Comparative Effectiveness of Four Nitrification Inhibitors for Mitigating Carbon Dioxide and Nitrous Oxide Emissions from Three Different Textured Soils

Abstract: Nitrification inhibitors (NIs) can be used to reduce both NO3−-N leaching and N2O-N emissions. However, the comparative efficacies of NIs can be strongly affected by soil type. Therefore, the efficacies of four nitrification inhibitors (dicyandiamide (DCD), 3, 4-dimethylpyrazole phosphate (DMPP), nitrogenous mineral fertilizers containing the DMPP ammonium stabilizer (ENTEC) and active ingredients: 3.00–3.25% 1, 2, 4-triazole and 1.50–1.65% 3-methylpyrazole (PIADIN)) were investigated in three different textur… Show more

“…Thus, NIs could have inhibited nitrification through suppressing the activity of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria or relevant enzymes, effectively delaying the oxidization process that transforms NH 4 + into NO 3 − . The decrease of CO 2 -C by applied NIs (Guo et al, 2021b) mostly was caused by the inhibition of microbial activities (Wolf et al, 2014). We found long-lasting higher NH 4 + -N concentration and lower CO 2 -C and N 2 O-N emissions from DMPP-treated soil as compared to PIADIN-treated soil (Fig.…”

“…(2022; in part also in Guo et al. [2021]), there are inaccuracies concerning the concept of the tested products, the quantity of the test products, and the applied analysis method. Altogether it resulted in a misleading and inappropriate evaluation of the efficiency of the tested products in particular with respect to practical field conditions.…”

“…The CO 2 -C, N 2 O-N, and CH 4 -C emission rates were calculated by measuring the concentration of these gases in the headspace of closed pots at different times. The CO 2 -C, N 2 O-N, and CH 4 -C samples were collected once a day during the first week, once per two days during the second week, and once per three days during the last two weeks (Guo et al, 2021a). The pots were first closed by adding lids, gases were mixed by collecting and injecting the gas in and out of the pots a few times with a syringe, and then samples were collected from the headspace at 0, 30, and 60 min after lid closure (Guo et al, 2021b).…”
