Comparative Effectiveness of Mixed Reality-Based Virtual Environments in Collaborative Design

Abstract: This paper presents two mixed-reality (MR) environments that provide alternative mediums that allow groups of people to share the same work and communication space in face-to-face and remote manners. Two experiments were executed to test the capabilities of the two MR systems in realistic environment and collaborative tasks against prevalent methods. Results indicated that the two MR systems significantly reduced the performance time for the collaborative design error detection task. Results also indicated les… Show more

“…To explore the effect of AR systems on collaboration, studies compared classical communication systems with the new support provided by AR. Wang and Dunston (2011) present an AR-based system for remote collaboration and face-toface co-located collaboration in the scenario of detecting design errors. Both approaches are studied and compared to a traditional paper-based drawing review method, pointing to the advantage of mixed-reality for remote collaboration tasks.…”

“…In contrast, BIM models are designed in terms of building components in 3D view. An error-prone process such as clash detection could be conducted automatically [9]. This paper aims to develop a framework of bringing facility management into design stage through BIM.…”

“…If the design errors associated with informational context on drawings cannot be fully identified, delays in construction and unforeseen costs can be incurred. Due to the limited use of up-to-date technologies to supplement traditional documentation in limited cases, the enormous amount of information (especially for large-scale construction projects) makes the engineers struggling with coping with data search, verification and amendment of the asplanned status [16][17][18][19].…”
