“…To evaluate the efficacy of the commercial application of FumD (FUM zyme ) in vivo , a feeding trial with turkeys was performed. Since turkeys are more sensitive to FB 1 exposure than poultry (summarized by Benlasher et al [ 40 ]), this species was chosen as the avian model for our experiment. Turkeys were fed basal diet (CON), fumonisin-contaminated diet (15 mg/kg FB 1 +FB 2 ; FB), or a fumonisin-contaminated diet supplemented with FUM zyme (15 mg/kg FB 1 +FB 2 , 15 U/kg FUM zyme ; FB+FUM zyme ) for 14 days ad libitum .…”

“…Yet, effects of fumonisins on performance parameters or liver weights were found to become evident only at high levels of dietary FB 1 (50–325 mg/kg FB 1 upwards) [ 48 , 49 , 50 ]. On the contrary, disruption of the sphingolipid metabolism was observed after chronic exposure to comparable low doses of FB 1 [ 40 , 51 ]. Since an increase in the Sa/So ratio precedes other signs of toxicity, this parameter was suggested as a sensitive fumonisin biomarker in turkeys [ 50 , 51 ].…”

“…In our study, we observed a non-significant change in feed intake and feed conversion in the broilers treated with FB1 alone compared to control. Previous studies have reported a decrease in feed intake and feed conversion when broilers, ducks, or turkeys were ingested with feed contaminated by FB1 ( Tessari et al, 2006 ; Benlasher et al, 2012 ). Further, our study showed no significant variations of body weight in broilers of treatment groups but health complications such as diarrhea and dysentery was observed in broilers fed with 200 mg FB1 per Kg feed.…”

“…As a point of comparison, swine develops lethal pulmonary edema within 4–7 days when fed FB containing feed or culture material at concentrations of ≥ 92 mg/kg [ 13 ]. Like mammals, poultry species also exhibit differential sensitivity, with lower concentrations of FB being more detrimental to turkeys and ducks than to chickens [ 14 , 15 ].…”
