Comparative efficacy of storage bags, storability and damage potential of bruchid beetle

Abstract: Groundnut during storage is attacked by number of stored grain pests and management of these insect pests particularly bruchid beetle, Caryedon serratus (Oliver) is of prime importance as they directly damage the pod and kernels. In this regard different storage bags that could be used and duration up to which we can store groundnut has been studied. Super grain bag recorded minimum number of eggs laid and less damage and minimum weight loss in pods and kernels in comparison to other storage bags. Analysis of … Show more

“…The loss of germination recorded in the control treatments was almost certainly due to seed-embryos destruction by the insects. PICS bags performed better than Supergrain bags (another type of hermetic bag available to farmers in developing countries) for storing groundnuts ( Harish et al., 2014 ). Supergrain bags enabled the development of C. serratus with a weight loss of 66.9% and 75.9% after 6 months of storage for shelled and unshelled groundnuts, respectively.…”

“…An increased use of these chemicals has, however, resulted in resistance among targeted species and, thus, reduced their effectiveness [74,75]. In addition, adulteration of these pesticides within the supply chain, associated environmental and health-related concerns due to unwanted pesticide exposure to smallholder farmers, and higher costs for marketing new chemical pesticides have limited the emergence of new chemicals effective for grain storage [74,[76][77][78].…”

“…Hermetic bag types protect seeds from insect infestation and damage due to slow insect activity under oxygen limitations within the sealed environment (Harish et al, 2014). Insect infestation in Super GrainPro bag started increasing from 12 months of storage (Figure 7).…”
