Comparative efficacy of treatments for post-traumatic stress disorder: a meta-analysis

Abstract: A meta-analysis was conducted on 61 treatment outcome trials for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Conditions included drug therapies (TCAs, carbamazepine, MAOIs, SSRIs, and BDZs), psychological therapies (behaviour therapy, Eye-Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), relaxation training, hypnotherapy, and dynamic therapy), and control conditions (pill placebo, wait-list controls, supportive psychotherapies, and non-saccade EMDR control). “…The challenge of how best to cultivate psychological resilience in the face of stress, trauma, and/or social adversity among disadvantaged populations is a complex, understudied question with few evidence-based answers. The effectiveness of existing therapies for treating symptoms of PTSD and Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) are demonstrated in extensive meta-analyses (Van Etten & Taylor, 1998;Bradley, Greene, Russ, Dutra, & Westen, 2005). African American women with PTSD are understudied and underrepresented in treatment populations despite increased exposure to trauma and risk for mental illnesses; and available studies suggest they are more likely to drop out of treatment (Matthieu & Ivanoff, 2006).…”
