Plant-derived phytochemicals have been touted as viable substitutes in a variety of diseases. All over the world, dentists have turned to natural remedies for dental cure due to the negative possessions of certain antibacterial mediators used in dentistry. Antimicrobial and other drugs are currently in use, but they show some side effects. Since ancient times, antioxidant EOs have been used for different ailments and have grown in popularity over time. Several in vitro, in vivo, and clinical trials have shown the safety and effectiveness of antioxidant essential oils (EOs) in oral health obtained from medicinal plants. The current review of literature provides a summary of secondary metabolites, more specifically EOs from 20 most commonly used medicinal plants and their applications in maintaining oral health. Dental caries and periodontal diseases are the most common and preventable global infectious diseases, with diseases of the oral cavity being considered major diseases affecting a person’s health. Several clinical studies have shown a connection between oral diseases and oral microbiota. This review discusses the role of antioxidant secondary metabolites in inhibiting the growth of oral pathogens and reducing the formation of dental plaque, and as well as reducing the symptoms of oral diseases. This review article contributes a basic outline of essential oils and their healing actions.

Objectives: To compare the caries experience between Azadirachta indica chewing stick users and toothbrush users among 35-44-year-old rural population in Southern India. Materials and Methods: This ex post facto research was conducted in the rural parts of two sub-administrative areas of a district in the Southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The sample size for the study was determined to be 400, with 200 subjects in each group. Subjects following indigenous oral hygiene methods were identified using an interviewer-administered questionnaire. After obtaining 200 subjects using A. indica chewing sticks, age, gender, and socioeconomic status matched controls using toothbrush were identified. American Dental Association type III examination was carried out to record caries experience (decayed missing filled teeth (DMFT) Index) after obtaining informed consent and thus obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software, version 20. Results: It was observed that the caries experience was more in toothbrush users compared to subjects following indigenous methods (DMFT, 4.38 ± 1.93 vs. 3.54 ± 1.02). Similar results were obtained when the decay component of DMFT index was exclusively compared. No significant difference in the plaque scores and the mean number of filled, missing teeth was observed between the two groups. Conclusion: Though conclusive results cannot be drawn from this study about the positive influence of indigenous methods on caries experience, the results emphasize the cardinal need to more thoroughly understand the potential benefits of indigenous methods before dismissing them as retrogressive approaches.

A cárie e a periodontite são as principais problemáticas enfrentadas pelo cirurgiões-dentistas em seu cotidiano. O desenvolvimento biológico de tais processos patológicos são acarretados por multifatores, como o aumento do índice de bactérias cariogênicas, como Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans), e periodontopatogênicas, como Porphyromonas gingivalis (P. gingivalis). Objetivo: Realizar uma revisão narrativa da literatura, a fim de analisar os métodos empregados por diversos autores para reduzir o índice do S. mutans e P. gingivalis na cavidade bucal e a anuência de inovações empregadas no âmbito odontológico. Metodologia: Foi realizada uma busca da literatura através da base de dados eletrônica PubMed, usando termos MeSH. Os artigos foram avaliados quanto aos critérios de inclusão e exclusão pré-estabelecidos por 04 pesquisadores independentes. Foi realizada a extração dos dados, tabulação e análise detalhada de todos os artigos selecionados. Resultados e Discussão: Com a seleção de 11 artigos, tornou-se evidente a existência de estudos que comprovaram a redução de S. mutans por fitoterápicos e enxaguantes bucais, entretanto, isso não se aplica à P. gingivalis, havendo pouca literatura clínica e laboratorial focada em tal bactéria. Considerações Finais: Para as bactérias cariogênicas, tornou-se evidente a eficácia de métodos com plantas medicinais e bochechos com chá verde na redução do biofilme na superfície dentária. No que tange às bactérias periodontopatogênicas, a literatura evidencia a importância da utilização de antibióticos na redução da P. gingivalis, todavia, é válido ressaltar o aumento da resistência bacteriana e necessidade de novas pesquisas na busca de métodos alternativos no controle dessas bactérias.
