Comparative evaluation of efficacy of three treatment modalities – tetracycline fibers, scaling and root planing, and combination therapy: A clinical study

Abstract: Background:Tetracycline is one of the primary antibiotics prescribed for antimicrobial therapy in periodontics. It has a broad spectrum of activity being effective against most bacteria as well as spirochetes. Due to limitations of systemic drug therapy, recent formulations of the drug for local administration in the subgingival area have been introduced, including collagen fibers impregnated with tetracycline.Aims and Objective:To compare the effectiveness of tetracycline fibers alone or in combination with s… Show more

“…In the clinical context, local/topical antibiotic adjuncts in the mechanical treatment o peri-implantitis have always been applied [15] without being supported by firm recom Different forms of tetracycline for local delivery are available and have been tested on periodontitis, such as nano-particles [29], fibres [30][31][32], and ointment [29]. The use of tetracycline fibres as an adjunct to scaling and root planning resulted in periodontal health improvement and, therefore, is a reliable treatment [33]. The combination of scaling and root planning with tetracycline fibres is a more effective therapeutic approach than scaling and root planning alone when clinical parameters such as clinical attachment level (CAL) and PD are considered [31].…”

“…Микрочастицы, матрица которых может быть выполнена с использованием как биодеградируемых (полилактид и полилактид-когликолид), так и неразлагаемых субстанций синтетического или природного происхождения, гарантирующих высокую устойчивость лекарственного препарата, заключенного в микрокапсулы. Эффективность использования систем, содержащих микрочастицы, обусловлена водородным показателем среды, молекулярным весом матрицы, соотношением полимера и лекарственного агента в структуре матрицы [7,10,20].…”

“…Local minocycline demonstrated considerable anti-inflammatory effects (29). The combination of tetracycline fibers and SRP is a reliable treatment, resulting in an improvement of the periodontal health (32). Tetracy-cline fibers combined with SRP are superior to SRP alone considering the clinical parameters, such as pocket depth and CAL (27).…”
