Comparative in vitro study of the proliferation and growth of human osteoblast‐like cells on various biomaterials

Abstract: In vitro studies about the growth behavior of osteoblasts onto biomaterials is a basic knowledge and a screening method for the development and application of scaffolds in vivo. In this in vitro study human osteoblast-like (HOB) cells were cultured on seven different biomaterials used in dental and craniomaxillofacial surgery, respectively. The tested biomaterials were synthetic biodegradable (MacroPore, Ethisorb, PDS, Beriplast P) and nonbiodegradable polymers (Palacos) as well as calcium phosphate cement (Bo… Show more

“…3b). Publications of Itthichaisri et al 29 and Neuss et al 13 as well as results of the present study support the theory that the same cell type behaves differently on different materials. Moreover, present results compare cultivation of stem cells on polymers under expansion and differentiation conditions for the first time.…”

“…Proliferation of gPS cells varied on polymers although initial cell seeding number was identical. Similar observations were described in proliferation studies of Neuss et al 13 and Itthichaisri et al 29 Some materials support proliferation and growth of cells, others have inhibitory effects. 13 According to this, gPS cells proliferated well on Resomer LR704, whereas BAK-1095 showed inhibitory effects.…”

“…Within bone tissue engineering, many scaffolds have been used to promote extracellular matrix formation and F o r P e e r R e v i e w mineralisation including bioactive glass, ceramics, titanium and polymers in an effort to substitute autologous bone for bone tissue engineering (Jones et al, 2007;Sun et al, 2006;Bokhari et al, 2005;Itthichaisri et al, 2007). None of which however, may be classified as a bone graft substitute gold standard.…”

“…Cements have a solid structure characterized by limited porosity and pore size [21]. BoneSource Ò , composed of tetracalcium phosphate and dicalcium phosphate anhydrous, has a porosity of 46% [29,30] and a pore size of 2-50 lm [31]. Calcibon Ò consists of a-TCP, and has a porosity of 30-40% [32,33] with a pore size of <1 lm [33].…”
