Summary:The morphological structure of the lingual papillae and their connective tissue cores (CTC) in a rabbit were studied using LM and SEM and were compared to that of other animal species. Externally, the filiform papillae distributed on the anterior surface of the dorsal tongue were short and conical with a round base and had a flat area on their anterior upper half. The CTC of the conical filiform papillae had a roughly triangular plate-like structure with a round top. Several small round protrusions were found on both inclined planes of the triangle. Spearhead-like filiform papillae were distributed on the anterior edge of the lingual prominence and branched filiform papillae were on the posteriorly wide area of the prominence. These papillae on the prominence had a slightly ramified CTC that differed from that of the CTC of the conical filiform papillae distributed on the anterior tongue. Dome-like fungiform papillae were distributed among the conical filiform papillae of the anterior tongue and had a CTC with a roundish structure that was almost but, not quite spherical in appearance with 1 to 10 small round concave indentations for taste buds on their upper surface. The foliate papillae had approximately 15 parallel ridges separated by grooves. These ridges contained a parallel thin plate-like CTC exhibited after removal of the epithelium. The vallate papilla was comprised of a spherical central papilla and had a circular wall with a flower-like CTC almost resembling a carnation.The stereostructure of the rabbit's filiform CTC are comparatively described as being morphologically in between those of rodents and those of the guinea pig and Japanese serow. Such evolution has probably occurred due to the species unique masticatory and gustatory needs and functions.

Bras. 33(Supl.1):75-84, dezembro 2013 75 RESUMO.-Para a análise e descrição comparativa da morfologia da língua e de suas papilas, bem como a distribuição destas, foram utilizados três animais de faixas etárias distintas (filhote, jovem, adulto), de duas espécies de primatas, Callithrix penicillata (sagui-de-tufo-preto) For the comparative analysis and description of the morphology of the tongue and taste buds as well as the distribution of these we have used three animals of different age groups (puppy, young adult), of two species of primate, Callithrix penicillata (black-tufted-ear-marmoset) and Alouatta caraya (black-howler-monkey), both being observed by scanning electron microscopy. The animals of the species Callithrix penicillata were from a commercial breeding of wild animals in Atibaia-SP and they had died of natural causes, and the specie Alouatta caraya were from the collection of Macroscopic Anatomy Laboratory of Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science University of São Paulo (FMVZ-USP). With the material analyzed and the technique employed could be seen that the tongue of black-tufted-ear-marmosets and black-howler-monkeys had examined lingual papillae similar to those described for other primate species. The tongue has morphological differences, especially for some types of lingual papillae, at the expense of advancing age of the animals. Overall, we found four types of lingual papillae, which are: filiform, fungiform, vallate and litter. The tongues of the black-howler--monkey had characteristics of animals with herbivorous diets. Possessing this way with the filiform papillae varied formats (crown, spear, multifilament), according to the regions of the tongue, and also robust taste, especially in the lingual prominence. Since the tongues of the black-tufted-ear-marmosets owned features of omnivorous animals. With filiform-shaped crown, large amounts of fungiform papillae and foliate papillae developed. It was observed that the changes of tongue papillae that occur in animals after birth correlated with the change in the types of foods consumed. Being suspected then conclude that diets have direct relation to the morphological and structural of the lingual papillae now here in the animals analyzed.INDEX TERMS: Lingual papillae, scanning electron microscopy, Callithrix penicillata, Alouatta caraya.

Lingual fungiform papillae are the only structures on the anterior two-thirds of the tongue that contain taste receptor cells and are the first gustatory structures to encounter food items. In humans, density of fungiform papillae is associated with taste sensitivity and food selection. Nonhuman primates also use the sense of taste to detect the nutritional contents of potential food items. The present study examines the ontogeny, distribution, and density of fungiform papillae in two species of greater bushbaby that differ in dietary specialization. Using light and electron microscopic methods, adult and infant cadaveric specimens (n = 4) of the frugivorous Otolemur garnettii and the exudativorous O. crassicaudatus were examined. The density of fungiform papillae was measured in an additional three adults of each species using 0.5% methylene blue. Observations by light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) indicate that receptor pores are open in neonates. One adult O. crassicaudatus examined by SEM shows a high number of anterior fungiform papillae on which one or more open taste pores can be observed. The mean density of fungiform papillae was more than 50% greater in O. garnettii (162.4 ± 70.63/ cm 2 ) compared to that in O. crassicaudatus (101.9 ± 20.63/cm 2 ). These results suggest that greater bushbabies may have precocious ability to detect taste stimuli, based on the presence of open taste pores at birth. The apparent difference in fungiform papillae density between species requires further exploration.
