Comparative morphology of the developmental stages of Bagous alismatis (Marsham, 1802) (Coleoptera, Curculionidae) and other Bagous species

Abstract: The article contains the detailed description of the larva and pupa of Bagous alismatis (Marsh.). It presents the diagnostic characters of the larva and pupa of B. alismatis. The comparison of developmental stages of B. alismatis and selected Bagous species is also provided. The distinguishing features of Bagous larva, pupa and setal index are also given. There are significant differences in the morphology of development stages of B. alismatis and other Bagous species. The pupa of B. alismatis is described for… Show more

“…The detailed descriptions of immature stages of Mogulones species are important for next studies of its taxonomic relationships inside subfamily Ceutorhynchinae. Larval morphology can also help in higher taxonomic levels (Marvaldi 1997), but also studies inside some tribes or genera are very important for complete understanding of each group (Gosik 2008;Skuhrovec 2006Skuhrovec , 2007. The reasons for such studies are more than only taxonomy and morphology; e.g.…”

“…Th e modal number of ams in Hypera is 4 (Anderson, 1948); in studied here specimens only in H. rumicis recognizable second pair of structures could be interpreted as setae or sensillae near ams 1 was found. Th ese morphological features of Hyperini larvae are not unique; the similar setal pattern is known f. e. in Bagoinae (Gosik, 2008) and certain Cyclominae (May, 1977;1993;1994;Marvaldi, 1998) with which Hyperinae supposed to be closely related (Zherikhin, Egorov, 1990).…”
