Comparative outcomes of using fibrin glue in septoplasty and its effect on mucociliary activity

Abstract: In our series of patients, we have seen no gross complications from fibrin glue usage. Fibrin glue can be readily used in septoplasty; it requires no special treatment, has an adequate hemostatic effect, and appears to promote the regeneration of mucociliary activity of the injured mucosa postoperatively.

“…Average pain intensity values were 14.0±8.7 for men with mild pain, 38.0±8.5 for men with moderate pain, 36.2±9.0 for women with moderate pain, 58. showed folowing first day after septoplasty with anterior packing pain intensity values: 5.9, 6.09 and 4.1 [28,36,37]. Almost all authors point out that nasal packing leads to more pronounced pain syndrome than nasal suturing and splints [38].…”

“…Nasal tampons have the advantages of being easily accessible, being inexpensive, and not prolonging surgery. On the other hand, they may cause some problems that would decrease the quality of life, such as synechia, septal perforation, dysfunction of the Eustachian tube, tampon allergy, toxic shock syndrome, mouth dryness, sore throat, infection, and aspiration [4][5][6]. Nasal tampons have been reported to make the patients more prone to obstructive sleep apnea and hypoxia.…”

“…In order to increase patient comfort and avoid nasal tampons, some techniques such as trans-septal suturation or use of fibrin glue have been tested [3][4][5][6], but there is no generally accepted technique at the present time.…”
