Comparative Pathology of Glomerulonephritis in Animals

Abstract: Abstract. Glomerulonephritis constitutes an important category of renal diseases in animals and has been recognized with increasing frequency in the last decade. We report here the comparative morphologic aspects of glomerulonephritis as a naturally occurring disease of animals. We briefly review the immunopathogenesis of glomerulonephritis. The morphology of renal lesions occurring in glomerulonephritis in dogs, cats, cattle, sheep, horses and swine has been reviewed with emphasis on the range and specificity… Show more

“…Typically for goats, the untreated baseline biopsies had mesangial regions that were pronounced with many mesangial cells. 23,27 Dense deposits were not observed. The capillary walls showed well-preserved fenestrated endothelium (Fig.…”

“…4.5.12.18.20. 27 teinuria (nephrotic syndrome), morphologic changes of mesangioproliferative glomerulonephritis by light and ultrastructural microscopy, and no demonstrable underlying disease. By light microscopy, five of seven horses had either epithelial or fibroepithelial crescents.…”

“…The most common glomerular lesion in the domestic cat is diffuse membranous glomerulonephritis (Nash et al, 1979;Slauson & Lewis, 1979;Newman et al, 2007;Grant Maxie & Newman, 2007). Numerous studies have related the presence of this disease with renal failure and the nephrotic syndrome (Nash et al, 1979;Slauson & Lewis, 1979;DiBartola & Rutgers, 1994).…”

“…Numerous studies have related the presence of this disease with renal failure and the nephrotic syndrome (Nash et al, 1979;Slauson & Lewis, 1979;DiBartola & Rutgers, 1994). Membranous glomerulonephritis is characterized by a segmental to diffuse thickening of the glomerular capillary basement membranes caused by subepithelial and intramembranous immunoglobulin deposits.…”
