Comparative removal of As(V) and Sb(V) from aqueous solution by sulfide-modified α-FeOOH

Abstract: Sulfide-modified α-FeOOH was synthesized for As(V) and Sb(V) removal.• As(V)/Sb(V) adsorption capacity and affinity were remarkably improved.• Enhanced removal was maintained at pH range from 2 to 11.• Reduction of As(V) to As(III) followed by adsorption was identified.• Removal was not affected by the presence of coexisting anions.

“…The co-existing anions in this study, including , displayed a slightly negative influence on Sb(V) adsorption by nZVI/AC. However, the oxyanions phosphate, silicate, chromate, and arsenate had the most negative effects on Sb(V) elimination, whereas the HA had the least negative effect of all the oxyanions studied here [ 2 , 13 , 15 , 44 ]. The effect of coexisting ions on the removal of antimony particles is affected by its own concentration.…”

“…The nano-iron will corrode when it comes into contact with water and trace oxygen is solubilized within it [ 1 , 2 , 13 , 15 ]. According to the findings of EXAFS research employed by Bruce et al, nano-iron forms intermediate product species such as ferrous iron (Hydrate) oxides before producing iron (hydrated) oxides [ 44 ]. Maghemite (Fe 2 O 3 ), magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ), lepidocrocite (FeOOH), and other minerals may be found in the final product.…”

“…In the spectrum of untreated rusty steel, the characteristic absorption peaks of Fe 3 O 4 are observed at 630 and 550 cm −1 , which can be ascribed to the vibrations of the Fe-O group [59][60][61]. The bands at 792 and 892 cm −1 were ascribed to the Fe-OH-Fe bending vibrations of α-FeOOH [62]. The diagnostic absorption bands of γ-FeOOH appeared at 1156 and 1022 cm −1 for the in-plane and 745 cm −1 for the out-of-plane Fe-OH bending vibrations [63,64].…”

“…Given that goethite (α-FeOOH), an abundant iron oxyhydroxide naturally found in sediments and rocks, is highly thermodynamically stable in nature, α-FeOOH-based composites have been used for removing toxic anions from water. A precipitation method was employed to coat iron oxide hydroxides (FeOOH) onto both GAC and PAC, resulting in modified GAC (MGAC) and modified PAC (MPAC).…”
