Comparative Risk of Liver and Intestinal Fluke Infection from Either Wild-Caught or Cultured Fish in Vietnam

Abstract: A survey for fish-borne zoonotic trematode (FZT) metacercariae in fish from the Northern Mountain Region of Vietnam was conducted from May to August 2014. The major objective was to evaluate the impact of water body types on the prevalence of FZT. A total of 846 fish (31 species) were collected from three water body types, including aquaculture ponds, rivers, and reservoirs. A pepsin digestion method was used for the recovery of metacercariae from fish. Overall, 29 of the 31 fish species were infected with FZT… Show more

“…Pungtungia herzi and Zacco platypus have a higher infection rate of C. sinensis metacercariae and are popularly eaten raw in Korea. Approximately 45 species of freshwater fish are known to carry C. sinensis metacercariae in Vietnam (Bui et al., 2016; De, Le, & Murrell, 2012; Hung et al., 2015; Kino, Inaba, De, Chau, & Sano, 1998; Phan, Bui, Nguyen, & Murrell, 2016; Phan, Ersboll, et al, 2010; Phan, Ersbøll, et al, 2010). These species include Hypophthalmichthys molitrix , Ct. idella , Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala , all eaten raw by local people.…”

“…There are 12 ethnic groups living in communes around the reservoir, and local people usually prepare and eat raw fish from the reservoir [29]. According to recent studies, the Thac Ba reservoir is known as a highly endemic area for C. sinensis [29,30]. In this region, the sewage system of each household is very simple and domestic waste water and latrines flush directly into canals nearby which flow into the reservoir.…”
