Comparative screening of the anti-oxidant and antimicrobial activities of Sempervivum marmoreum L. extracts obtained by various extraction techniques

Abstract: This paper presents a comparative study of the anti-oxidant and anti--microbial activities, total phenolic compounds and total flavonoids in extracts obtained from houseleek (Sempervivum marmoreum L.) leaves by the classical (maceration), ultrasonic and Soxhlet extraction (CE, UE and SE, respectively). The extract obtained by the CE contained higher amounts of phenolic and flavonoid compounds and showed a better antioxidant activity than those obtained using other two techniques. All the extracts, independent … Show more

“…Previous studies on the genus Sempervivum L. were directed to the biological activities of exchange isolated by different extraction methods (Stojicevic et al 2008;Alberti et al 2008;Kekesi et al 2003;Abram and Donko 1999). The juice of S. tectorum was applied to herpetic eruptions of the skin, minor burns and wounds (Alberti et al 2008).…”

“…Furthermore, S. tectorum has been reported as a cure for shingles, dysentery, and headaches [42]. It is an effective agent for the treatment of wounds, sores, burns, abscesses, or painful areas; the juice, freshly squeezed from leaves, as well as refrigerated juice, is a certain remedy for insect bites and for easing ear pain and inflammation, while tea prepared from its leaves is recommended for the treatment of ulcers [38]. Traditional knowledge of the anti-oxidant and antimicrobial properties of different extracts of S. marmoreum was tested.…”
