As no absorption of the protonated free ligand occurs at 418 nm, this species does not give any fluorescence emission and the recorded spectrum is characteristic of the deprotonated form of 3HF. This form has a significant fluorescence quantum yield which makes it detectable even at very low concentrations, which is specially the case at pH = 4.0. During the first cation additions (0 ≤ R ≤ 0.5), this band decreases in intensity without any new fluorescence signal, which definitely characterizes the formation of a nonfluorescent first complex.…”
