Comparative study among Spanish students of health sciences degrees: Facing death

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions and attitudes of students of health sciences faculties (medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy) regarding specific issues related to death and end of life in both professional and personal realms. A descriptive, cross-sectional, and multi-center approach was used. The modified Bugen Scale for facing death was used. The study population (411 students) encompassed three distinct groups: students from the degrees of medicine, nursing, and physiotherapy. In to… Show more

“…In that sense, the Frommelt’s Attitude Toward Care of the Dying Scale (FATCOD) correlates, as does the SEPC, with palliative care training and experience [61]. Bugen’s Coping with Death Scale has also been used as a measure of self-competence in nursing, physiotherapy, and medicine undergraduate students [62].…”

“…As a final point, we emphasize that studies with university students that have used the same tool to evaluate attitudes towards death [24] but have not examined culture as a main focus [34][35][36], evidenced the need to include specific end-of-life up-skilling within the curricula of health professionals, with training being the only key to improving coping. Nonetheless, studies carried out within different cultural contexts [28,29,31], such as was the case in the present study, have found this dimension to be a main axis.…”
