Comparative Study of Acceptance and Adaptation to New Complete Dentures, Using Two Construction Protocols

Abstract: According to the results of the study, patients' overall acceptance of their newly constructed complete dentures improved significantly for both groups (traditional and duplication construction protocols). Study participants adapted dissimilarly to their newly constructed complete dentures regarding comfort, as assessed by the total number of sore spots, although the recorded mean number of initial adaptation/adjustment visits was equal.

“…The main advantage of replicated dentures could be considered the more comfortable adaptation of elderly patients to their new prostheses 22 . The inherent difficulties of randomization in a study design between traditional and duplication construction protocols led to only nonrandomized clinical studies [23][24][25] been published to the literature up to date.…”

“…Duplication of existing complete dentures, as part of a replacement denture construction protocol, has been an alternative denture fabrication technique. Three prospective clinical studies [23][24][25] compared CDs constructed with a duplication protocol to CDs with a traditional construction protocol. No significant differences could be detected in all studies regarding patients' preference, a fact that could be attributed to the strict adherence to each construction protocol since all of the studies were set at an academic environment.…”

“…Another important aspect at the elderly rehabilitation is the adaptation to the new complete prosthesis (Kamalakidis et al, 2016). In this population, the neuroplasticity necessary to learn new motor abilities or to adapt to the existent arrangements can be compromised (Luraschi et al, 2013).…”
