Comparative study of embedding methods

Abstract: Embedding experimental data is a common first step in many forms of dynamical analysis. The choice of appropriate embedding parameters ͑dimension and lag͒ is crucial to the success of the subsequent analysis. We argue here that the optimal embedding of a time series cannot be determined by criteria based solely on the time series itself. Therefore we base our analysis on an examination of systems that have explicit analytic representations. A comparison of analytically obtained results with those obtained by a… Show more

“…This proposal is supported by Abarbanel (1995). To a limited degree the Fraser-Swinney proposal was confirmed in a recent comparative study of embedding criteria (Cellucci, et al, 2003). It should be noted, however, that this comparison was limited to four criteria and is therefore not definitive.…”

“…Several candidate criteria for selecting m and Lag have been proposed. An incomplete review of the very large embedding criterion literature is given in Cellucci, et al (2003). Fraser and Swinney (1986) proposed that the best value of Lag to use in an embedding is given by the first minimum of the I(Xi, Xi+Lag) versus Lag function.…”

“…To compare different FNN methods, Cellucci et al [27] have tested them on the Rössler system and the Mackey-Glass equation. Five criteria for selecting embedding parameters have been applied to the observables of the systems.…”

“…However, these theorems are existence proofs (Abarbanel et al, 1993) and they do not directly explain how to get a suitable time delay or embedding dimension from a finite time series (Pecora et al, 2007). Implementation of the reconstruction method requires that the time delay and the dimension be determined by using heuristic and/or statistical criteria (for reviews Abarbanel et al, 1993;Schreiber, 1999; see also Cellucci et al, 2003;Letellier et al, 2008). It is important to stress that the embedding dimension required by the embedding theorem is a sufficient condition and could be larger than the necessary embedding dimension (Abarbanel et al, 1993).…”
