“…Nowadays, with the rapid developments of the economy and industrial automation, the shortage of resources (such as non-renewable energy, oil [53], and coal [54]) and environmental pollution (air pollution [55] and human health [56]) are becoming more and more serious [57]. How to effectively control energy shortage [58][59][60][61][62][63] and engine emission reduction [64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74] are the main areas of interest for researchers today.…”

“…Therefore, the urgency to save energy and reduce emissions is still the main concern for the use of turbocharged engines. As is well known, VVA and EGR have been proved to be effective techniques for improving the efficiency and reducing the probability of knocking in turbocharged engines. …”

“…With EGR, the experimental study showed that the combustion characteristics were affected by natural gas–hydrogen blends. The combustion duration and flame development duration increase with increased EGR rate; however, these decreased with the increased H 2 in the blends. , Zhao et al added hydrogen to an isobutanol–gasoline during the EGR and investigated the effects of hydrogen combined with EGR on the engine thermal efficiency and emission. The results showed that the combustion progress of the butanol–gasoline mixture slowed down with EGR, and that combining hydrogen with EGR can effectively improve the combustion stability because of reducing the burn-period extension.…”

“…To overcome the autoignition resulting in the so-called “super knocking” in the spark-ignition engine, exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is a promising strategy due to its high-dilution, low-temperature characteristics, which favor the distribution of species and temperature homogeneity inside the engine . In order to meet the stringent greenhouse gas regulations, EGR is also an effective method of mitigating the emissions when applied to engines. , EGR consists of various components, and it has been proved that the species in EGR could affect the combustion process in different ways by various experimental and numerical studies. , Especially, if a long-route or a short-route EGR loop (after or before the catalyst) is used, pollutant emissions (CO, HC, PM, NO x , and others) could be found in the air–EGR mixture at the intake. Among these components, a small trace amount of NO is of particular interest to the combustion community since the sensitizing effect of the NO x on fuels combustion has been addressed. , …”
