Good cementing job practices are required for an efficient advancement in drilling and production operations. Most drilled oil and gas wells in Ghana employ the use of class G cement in its cementing operations. This class G cement is imported, scarcely available and relatively more expensive compared to other forms of cements. It also does not promote the local content and local participation policy of the country in the oil and gas sector. This has therefore necessitated the need to research into available local cements (easily available and relatively inexpensive) as an alternative to serve the same purpose as the imported class G cement. This research therefore assesses the performance of class G cement blended with local cement at different ratios in an attempt to reducing the overdependence of the class G cement while considering the technical requirements and economic implications. All the blended samples met the minimum API compressive strength requirement of 1500 psi when cured for 8 hours at 140 °F. Though, free fluid values increased with increasing amount of local cement ratio, all values recorded were below the maximum field requirement value of 5.9%. The blended samples exhibited the ability to be pumpable, recording plastic viscosity less than the maximum recommended value of 100 centipoise (cP). It was therefore established that the use of blended samples (local and Class G) for oil well cementing operations in Ghana would save the industry from 19.57% to 78.28% of money over the use of class G cement only. Considering the performance and economic benefits of the blended cement over the class G cement only at the test conditions, it is highly recommended that, the industry adopts the blending of class G cement with the local cement in their cementing operations to boost the local economy as well as to reducing their cementing operation cost.

The Thickening Time of Ferrous Cement Slurry System in High-Pressure and High-Temperature Environment

Experimentally, the aim of this research paper is to investigate the thickening time (TT) of different ferrous cement slurry systems in high-pressure and high-temperature (HPHT) environment. Objectively, the study collected eight (8) samples of groundwater from 8 different boreholes, as mix-water, from the study area, Kolo Creek. These mix-water samples were subjected to water chemistry analysis, based on the American Public Health Association (APHA) drinking water test methods; the results obtained from these tests were benchmarked with the standard values of World Health Organisation (WHO), and Nigeria Standard Drinking Water Quality (NSDWQ) standards. These results reveal that, in each of the tested mix-water samples, ferrous ion (Fe2+) concentration was higher (0.52 to 6.82mg/L); which is greater than 0.3mg/L, and this was the only chemical parameter that was in strong disagreement with the WHO’s and NSDWQ’s Drinking Water Quality standards. Subsequently, each of these ferrous mix-waters were used in the formulation of cement slurries at the water-to-cement ratio of 0.44 in batches; each of these formulated slurries were used, to test for the effects of ferrous ion concentration in mix-water on the TT performances of the slurries. These TT tests were performed using the Chandler model 7322 HPHT Consistometer. These tests were conducted based on the API Specification 10A methods of 1995. Generally, the results obtained reveal that, as the concentration of Fe2+increases in the mix-water, the TT of the cement slurry accelerated in the HPHT environment. This means that the cement slurry set faster. Also, this set-fast behaviour of high ferrous ion concentration towards slurry suggested that, high concentration of ferrous ion induced the exothermic reaction of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) during the hydration of the ferrous cement slurry. Therefore, ferrous neat cement slurry is only suitable for cementing shallow oil-well, except retarding additives are added into the slurry.

Cementing around the casing in oil and gas wells provides proper zonal isolation, holds the casing in place, and prevents fluid migration is an important part of the completing process and well plugging for abandonment. A reliable cement rheology prediction is central to the success of oil well-cementing operations. Properties of the rheological are plastic viscosity and yield stress by using advanced shear-stress/shear-strain controlled Viscometer with using Ground Granulated Blast Furnaces Slug, and Superplasticizer investigated. The effect replacement of Class G cement according to API [1]. (American petroleum institute) classification is performed at different rates. (15%-75%) Blast Furnaces Slag (GGBFS) at intervals of 15%. Further, by using different curing conditions (moist curing and @38°C, @60°C water path curing chamber). The results show that blended cement with 45% of GGBFS has significantly increased in compressive strength more than unblended cement type G. This happened because the fine micro GGBS influences the heat of hydration through the pozzolanic reaction and the effect of superplasticizer. The double effect of GGBS and Superplasticizer on the plastic viscosity and yield point, the linear relationship between shear stress and shear rate, by using Bingham plastic Fluid Model, the slurries act as Newtonian behavior at high shear.
