Comparative Study of Particulate Matter (PM) Emissions in Diesel Engine Using Diesel-Methanol Blends

Abstract: In this research, Palm Oil Methyl Ester (PME) was added to methanol-biodiesel fuel in order to reduce the emissions. Thus, for diesel engines, alcohols are receiving increasing attention because they are oxygenated and renewable fuels. Therefore, in this study, the effect of PM emission level of a four cylinder, naturally aspirated, indirect injection diesel engine has been experimentally investigated by using methanol-blended diesel fuel from 0% to 20% with an increment of 5%. Thus, the effects of methanol on… Show more

“…Most of the PM emissions from the diesel engines are mainly produced from the incomplete combustion of fuel hydrocarbons during the combustion process, so the in-cylinder temperature has a great effect on the formation and oxidation of particles. 41 Figure 5 showed the effect of SOI1 on the particle size distribution (PSD). The total particle number (PN) and geometric mean diameter (GMD) with the sweep of SOI1 were shown in Figure 6.…”

“…The specification of 4-cylinder diesel engine are shown in Table 2. The similar engine utilize by Rizalman etc [11]. To reduce the temperature of the cylinders and the lubricant, the cooling system of the engine is connected to a cooling-water tower by means of a cooling-water pipe.…”

“…While such interventions could attenuate effects, real solutions must come from technical advancements to lower the use of fossil fuels. Combustion engines can be made more efficient, while petroleum itself can be replaced by methanol, which produces fewer particles during combustion [ 76 ].…”
