Comparative Study of Ramp-Rate Control Algorithms for PV with Energy Storage Systems

Abstract: The high variability of solar irradiance, originated by moving clouds, causes fluctuations in Photovoltaic (PV) power generation, and can negatively impact the grid stability. For this reason, grid codes have incorporated ramp-rate limitations for the injected PV power. Energy Storage Systems (ESS) coordinated by ramp-rate (RR) control algorithms are often applied for mitigating these power fluctuations to the grid. These algorithms generate a power reference to the ESS that opposes the PV fluctuations, reduci… Show more

“…For a PV/BESS plant in [8], the output of the next minute is modeled as a discretetime Markov process and the plant's operation is optimized accordingly. Similar work on smoothing RES output is the subject of [23][24][25]. The statistical tools used in these studies are reliable only for making short-term predictions at the secondsminutes timeframe.…”

“…For this reason, to ensure the integration of high level of RESs to the power systems, some suggestions must be introduced as developing new storage technologies adopted for voltage regulation: with the growing of RESs connected into the grid, the requirement of ES system (ESS) becomes very important [22, 23]. So, storage systems must be considered in other studies such as ES using superconducting magnetic, hydro pumping storage, and electrical vehicles storage (EVS) [24]. Different concepts of ES are presented in [25], in order to maintain the voltage limits in distribution networks with increasing PV, where the AP curtailment can be avoided.…”

“…The high level of integration of solar PV in the network leads to some problems regarding overvoltage and overload [31,32]. Luthander et al [33] investigated a solution for PV PC and placement of decentralized energy storage (ES) to control voltage and current.…”
