Comparative study of the effect of taurine, caffeine, and /or paracetamol on male fertility and teratogenicity in rats

Abstract: Caffeine (CF) is one of the popular nutrients that have been implicated as a risk factor for infertility. Taurine (TAU) is the most abundant free amino-acid present in mammalian tissues and cells. Paracetamol (PCM) is an effective oral analgesic. The present study represented to evaluate the effects of CF, TAU and /or PCM on male fertility in rat and the development of their fetuses. The 1 st group was kept as a normal control received distilled water. The 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th groups received orally 250 mg / k… Show more

“…Attention has to be given to the tail of the epididymis which is a storage site since sperm reserves are directly related to sperm count. The observations on the testicular sperm reserves and the tail segment of the epididymis contradicts the report that taurine is vital for reproduction (Ebtehal, 2018). Combination of taurine and cypermethrin at the two doses tested did not enhance paired sperm reserves in all the segments of the epididymis and the testes.…”

“…The diminished sperm reserves observed may be attributed to the osmo-regulatory property of taurine. Taurine has been credited as a neurotransmitter, osmo-regulator and antioxidant in most tissues (Ebtehal, 2018). It has been reported as one of the osmolytes of semen that cause volume regulation.…”

“…Moreover, recently, the use of energy drinks has been identified as a high CAF source which raises concerns on the wide use of these beverages. In addition, energy drinks overuse has been associated with seizures and arrhythmias [17,18], affect conductance and refractoriness on the heart, resulting in the development of various arrhythmias [19]. Moreover, the consuming pattern of CAF is highly intimate with doping effect.…”
