Comparative study of three training methods for enhancing process control performance: Emphasis shift training, situation awareness training, and drill and practice

Abstract: Three training methods to improve attention management skills in process control were compared. Forty students from technical disciplines participated in a five-hour module of emphasis shift training (EST), EST combined with situation awareness training (EST/SA), and drill and practice (D&P) on a simulated process control task. Participants were then tested three times for 45 min each (immediately after training, two weeks after training, and six weeks after training) for system control performance and diagnos… Show more

“…Training has become an essential activity and a strategic procedure for organizations rather than a routine process or just a part of an induction program for employees. Educating employees and improving their knowledge and awareness is necessary to increase their adeptness in their work, and also to improve the superiority and quality of service provision [3]. In terms of risk management, Lazzerini and Pistolesi found that training has key contributions to the risk management process as it develops and reinforces safe behavior and is associated with competence [4].…”

“…The training experiment was conducted to study the effectiveness of three training methods for process control performance. Findings concerning this research question are reported in a separate article (Burkolter, Kluge, Sauer, & Ritzmann, 2010). Data were collected 2 weeks after training.…”

“…The intended goal of the D&P training was to enhance diagnostic performance of practiced fault states across a retention interval. Detailed information on the training approaches can be found in Burkolter et al (2010).…”

“…Several references can be found in [ 5 7 ] that debate on the problem of situation awareness (SA) representations and applications. Burkolter et al [ 5 ] mention that three training methods (Emphasis shift training, situation awareness training, and drill and practice) can be used to improve attention management skills in process control. They examined attention skills and process control performance in familiar and non-familiar situations over a retention interval of several weeks.…”
