Comparative Study of ZnO-and-TiO2-Nanoparticles-Functionalized Polyvinyl Alcohol/Chitosan Bionanocomposites for Multifunctional Biomedical Applications

Annu,
Zafar Iqbal Bhat,
Khalid Imtiyaz
et al.

Abstract: This study aimed to synthesize chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol (CS/PVA)-based zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) hybrid bionanocomposites (BNCs) and observe their comparative accomplishment against the skin cancer cell line, A431, and antioxidant potential. CS was blended with PVA to form polymeric films reinforced with the immobilization of ZnO and TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs), separately. The optimization of the BNCs was done via physicochemical studies, viz. moisture content, swelling ratio, and contact an… Show more

“…Similarly, the CO, C–O–C, and C–O stretching peaks appear at 1688, 1243, and 1045 cm –1 respectively. The presence of Ti–O bond stretching at 609 cm –1 in the fingerprint region evidences the presence of TiO 2 Nps in the nanocomposite . In the case of the CS/PVA@TiO 2 / f -MWCNT nanocomposite, the FTIR spectra exhibit peaks at 3284 and 2914 cm –1 , which represent hydrogen-bonded O–H and C–H stretching vibrations.…”

“…The presence of FTIR peaks at 1236 and 1057 cm –1 is due to O–O stretching of CS and C–O–C stretching of CS and PVA. From FTIR spectral data of CS/PVA@TiO 2 , the O–H stretching is substantially reduced to 3260 cm –1 due to combined interaction of intermolecular H-bonding between the –OH group of CS/PVA and OTiO as well as between surface carbonyl groups of f -MWCNTs and –NH 2 of CS along with existing hydrogen bonded –OH groups of the CS/PVA matrix . Similarly, the CO, C–O–C, and C–O stretching peaks appear at 1688, 1243, and 1045 cm –1 respectively.…”

“…Due to this reason, the application of chitosan is not only confined to environmental applications but also emerges in different fields of science and technology. Biopolymers such as chitosan with its distinctive gel-forming capacity, particularly when coupled with nanoparticles like Ag ZnO, TiO 2 , etc., [ 73 , 74 , 78 ] in bionanocomposites or nanocomposites, hold great promise in food packaging [ 79 ], biomedical [ 78 , 80 , 81 ], and textile applications [ 82 , 83 ], in addition to environmental applications [ 84 , 85 ]. Accompanied by interesting characteristics, chitosan has some drawbacks as well including limited selectivity for certain contaminants.…”

“…Chitosan (Ch), a biodegradable polysaccharide extracted from crustaceans, has been shown to be safe and non-toxic in both animals and humans. Due to its excellent biocompatibility, chitosan has been widely used in pharmaceutical research and industry as a carrier for drug delivery or as part of biocomposites [ 33 ]. In the study by Nie et al [ 34 ], porous foams composed of PLGA/chitosan were manufactured using a combination of spray drying and foaming techniques with supercritical CO 2 .…”
