Background: Economic loss due to diseases is a major problem in aquaculture. A number of bacterial illnesses may arise from the consumption of sea food that has been contaminated at source or during the processing. This study aims to isolate and characterize some bacteriophages specific for the most common sea food pathogens in addition to their associated bacteria. The work also extended to study the host-phage interaction and the potential use of phages as antibacterial agents to control sea food infecting pathogens. Materials and methods: Estimation of Vibrio spp and Aeromonas spp. in addition to their associated phages in different sources of sea food such as fish (Tilapia sp.), clam (Tapes decussatns) and crab (Callinectes sapidus) was carried out. Results: Crab exhibited the highest counts (200 CFU/g) of Vibrio spp., while the highest counts of Vibriophages (1500 PFU/g) were detected in clam. Fish harbored the highest counts (30 CFU/g) and (3000 PFU/g) of Aeromonas spp. and Aeromonas phages, respectively. Three different phages (VPS1, APS2 and APS3) in addition to the isolated bacteria were characterized. Results showed that VPS1, APS2 and APS3 were different, which was confirmed by molecular characterization using RAPD-PCR and the protein profile. APS3 was entrapped into calcium alginate beads and tested as antibacterial agent against Aeromonas hydrophila. Efficiency of APS3 was superior to the free particles (p<0.05) and realized 2.7 fold decrease in bacterial growth rate. Phage seeded beads were recycled for 7 successive cycles. Their activity was reduced up on reuse. Recommendations: This study revealed that phages remain an excellent potential tool for control of bacterial pathogens. Further research and manipulation of the isolated phages could produce novel effective biocontrol agents of sea food infectious diseases in marine aquaculture systems

This study reports the occurrence of different Vibrio and Salmonella species in 52 samples of Mytilus galloprovincialis collected from four sites along the Atlantic coast between Agadir and Essaouira (Anza, Cap Ghir, Imssouane and Essaouira). The level of Escherichia coli (E. coli) was also determined to evaluate the degree of microbial pollution in the investigated areas. In this study three methods were used : AFNOR NF EN ISO 6579 V08-013 for Salmonella spp., the provisional method routinely used by several laboratories (Institut Pasteur, Paris,…) for Vibrio cholerae and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in the seafood, and the most probable number method (MPN) using Norm ISO/TS 16649–3 (2005) for E. coli. The most frequently isolated Vibrios were Vibrio alginolyticus (90.4% of samples), followed by V. cholerae non O1 non O139 (15.4%) and V. parahaemolyticus (7.7%). Salmonella spp. was found in 15% of the samples. The number of E. coli ranged between 0.2/100 g and 1.8 103 /100 g of mussel soft tissues. This study indicates the potential sanitary risk associated with the presence of pathogenic bacteria in cultivated mussels in the two populous regions of southern Morocco, where shellfish production and maritime tourism are important to the local economy.

Summary:The reproductive cycle of Acanthocardia tuberculata (Linnaeus, 1758) was studied in M'diq Bay. The gonadal development was determined by means of standard histological techniques, mean oocyte diameters and a condition index. Rough cockle is a gonochoric species with synchronous gonadal development and spawning in males and females. The sex ratio obtained was not significantly different to 1:1. Gametogenesis began in late winter (November) coinciding with the temperature drop. In June, with increasing sea water temperature, most of the population was spent and resting oocytes appeared dispersed in the gonad. Resting stage occurred from August to October, during which time sex could not be determined in 100% of the population. A. tuberculata showed a clear seasonality in its gametogenic cycle, with one spawning peak per year in June. Quantitative measurements of 6318 oocyte diameters indicated the patterns of development observed in the qualitative staging. The results obtained revealed the direct influence of temperature on the reproductive cycle. First sexual maturity occurred at 42.77 mm shell length. The information gathered in this study allowed preliminary management measures to be suggested for the fishery of this species, including a closed season during the main spawning season (MayJune) and the establishment of a minimum landing size (at least 50 mm shell length) for A. tuberculata from the Moroccan Mediterranean coast.Keywords: Cardiidae; reproductive cycle; gametogenesis; image analysis; cockle; first sexual maturity. El corruco es una especie gonocórica con el desarrollo gonadal y desove sincrónico en machos y hembras. La proporción de sexos obtenida no fue significativamente diferente a1: 1. La gametogénesis comenzó a finales del invierno (noviembre) coincidiendo con la bajada de temperatura. En junio, con el aumento de la temperatura del agua de mar, la mayoría de la población era ovocitos gastados y dispersos en la gónada. La etapa de reposo entre agosto y octubre, tiempo durante el cual el sexo no se pudo determinar en el 100% de la población. A. tuberculata presentó una clara estacionalidad en su ciclo gametogénico, con un pico de desove en junio. Las mediciones de diámetros de 6.318 ovocitos dan los patrones de desarrollo observados desde el punto de vista cualitativo.
