Comparative Study on Faecal Contamination and Occurrence of Salmonella spp. and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Two Species of Shellfish in Morocco

Abstract: Abstract:Background: Analysis of bivalves for microbial bacteria is a tool for sanitary control. Methodology: 104 samples of bivalves made up of smooth Venus (Callista chione) and red cockles (Acanthocardia tuberculatum) were analysed for Escherichia coli by using MPN technique and for Salmonella by method ISO 6579 and Vibrio parahaemolyticus, analysed biochemically and by multiplex PCR. Results and Conclusions:Seasonal variation of faecal contamination was observed between wet and dry periods in three locatio… Show more

“…Also, there was complete absence of Aeromonas spp. in crab which was consistent with that reported by Boutaib et al (4) This may be attributed to high tolerance of Vibrio spp. and their phages to a wide range of salinity and their tend to be more common in warm water, when temperature exceeds 17°C.…”

“…(3) Different pathogenic bacteria were previously isolated from sea food. (4) Vibrio spp. are an important cause of illnesses in molluscan bivalves that concentrate different particles during their filter feeding.…”

“…This is consistent with the findings of other authors (Matté et al 1994 ; Normanno et al 2006 ). In the study of Boutaib et al 2011 , the faecal contamination (counts of E. coli ) was high through the year and above of the threshold 230 E. coli/ 100 g in both bivalves harvested from Fnideq location (Morocco).…”

“…Bakr et al ( 2011 ) found this bacterium in 8.0% of their samples (Alexandria, Egypt). In a recent study by Boutaib et al ( 2011 ) carried out in Morocco (Rabat) on faecal contamination using 104 samples of Callista chione and Acanthocardia tuberculatum, indicated that the presence of Salmonella was detected in 7 samples of A. tuberculatum and two of C. chione.…”

“…In the northwest of Morocco a previous study on the depth segregation of Acanthocardia tuberculata revealed a correlation between mean length and depth segregation, in which adults are positioned higher but without exceeding a depth of 15 m (Rharrass et al 2011). From the work of Boutaib et al (2011) on the faecal contamination of the red cockle at M'Diq and Oued Laou, shellfish can be sold more safely after purification under heat treatment.…”
