Comparative Study on Wood CNC Routing Methods for Transposing a Traditional Motif from Romanian Textile Heritage into Furniture Decoration

Abstract: This paper presents experimental research on the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) routing of a traditional motif collected from Ţara Bârsei (Transylvania region) using two methods, namely, engraving (Engrave) and carving (V-Carve). The analysis of the CNC router processes includes the calculation of the path lengths, an assessment of the processing time and wood mass loss, and an evaluation of the tool wearing by investigating the tool cutting edge on a Stereo Microscope NIKON SMZ 18 before and after processin… Show more

“…Computerized numerical control (CNC) routing is a widely used method for the manufacture of wood-based furniture ornaments (Lungu et al 2021a). This technique can be employed to revive traditional motifs from cultural heritage (Lungu et al 2021b) and wood-carved ornaments embedded in the historical objects (Namicev and Namiceva 2018).…”

“…The study involved the visual examination of the quality of the routed surface based on the tool's position relative to the wood grain direction, calculated as an angular value related to the central angle of the circle (Figure 2). Thus, for a central angle (α), the machining angle in relation to the wood grain direction is (90°α) for angles above the horizontal axis, to the right of the vertical axis (quadrant Q 1 ) (Figure 2a), (α -270°) for angles above the horizontal axis, to the left of the vertical axis (quadrant Q 2 ) (Figure 2b), (270°α) for angles below the horizontal axis, to the left of the vertical axis (quadrant Q 3 ) (Figure 2c), and (α -90°) for angles below the horizontal axis, to the right of the vertical axis (quadrant Q 4 ) (Figure 2d) [5]. The purpose of the study was to visualise defects such as torn fibres and rough surfaces on the 180 mm diameter circles milled on the CNC machine during the machining process.…”

“…The engraving process has begun to involve the use of technology. Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) Router technology, widely used in the furniture industry, presents opportunities for engraving on various materials such as wood surfaces [14]. Another recent technology that is popularly used is laser technology which has been adopted in industrial processes for the manufacture of Engraving.…”
