Comparative transcriptome analyses on terpenoids metabolism in field- and mountain-cultivated ginseng roots

Abstract: Background There exist differences in morphological traits and phytochemical compositions between field- and mountain-cultivated Panax ginseng (FCG and MCG), which might be attributed to variations of terpenoids metabolism adapting to different growth conditions. The present work aims to uncover these variations. Results Among 26,648 differentially expressed genes, 496 genes distributed in seven dominant terpenoids pathways were identified. Di… Show more

“…The transcriptome is a complete set of RNA transcripts in a cell at a specific developmental stage, and provides information on gene expression and regulation related to a variety of cellular processes including secondary metabolite biosynthesis [ 19 , 20 ]. With the development of next-generation sequencing, RNA sequencing is an effective method for investigating the metabolic pathways influenced by active ingredients and associated gene expression in different tissues or samples, such as flavonoid biosynthesis in Ampelopsis megalophylla [ 21 ], terpenoids metabolism in ginseng roots [ 22 ] and polysaccharide and alkaloid content in Dendrobium [ 23 ]. To date, there are no studies on the genetic modification of A. oxyphylla either toward increased production of secondary metabolites or biomass accumulation.…”

“…Of the plant VOCs, the most intensively studied substance group has been the terpenoids [ 9 ]. Five-carbon isoprene units, including a wide variety of monoterpenoids and sesquiterpenoids, are emitted from a wide range of species [ 10 ]. Terpenoids are predominantly released from plants in sunlight, and broad-leaved trees exhibit strong seasonality in terpenoid emission [ 11 ].…”

“…Mountain cultivated ginseng (MCG), which simulates the growth habit and ecological environment of wild ginseng, can be regarded as an imitation of wild ginseng. 10 Many results showed that the MCG had stronger pharmacological activities than Garden-Cultivated Ginseng (CG). 11 MCG has been collected in the Chinese pharmacopoeia since 2005, 12 considered as the sources of ginseng, using the same standard with CG.…”
