Comparative zone electrophoresis of catalase of Staphylococcus species isolated from mammalian skin

Abstract: Vertical polyacrylamide slab gel electrophoresis was conducted for the catalase enzymes of representative strains of 18 proposed species and subspecies of the genus Staphylococcus. The catalase bands which resulted were predominantly monomorphic within each of the species and differences in catalase mobilities were observed between many of the species. The electrophoretic mobilities of the catalases were supportive to the scheme of classification used. Many strains of certain species demonstrated multiple cata… Show more

“…In each, the catalases are the products of two different genes that are regulated separately [2,3]. Many staphylococci also have been shown by electrophoretic analysis to have multiple catalase activities [4]. However, the basis for these multiple activities has not been reported.…”

“…1980). Enzymatic lysis by lysostaphin is possible but expensive, and such laborious and hazardous techniques as the French Press (Zimmerman 1976;Zimmerman & Kloos 1976) are methods of last resort. It is now evident that in addition to Staph.…”
