Comparing complex perspectives on obesity drivers: action‐driven communities and evidence‐oriented experts

Abstract: SummaryIntroductionThe Foresight obesity map represents an expert‐developed systems map describing the complex drivers of obesity. Recently, community‐led causal loop diagrams have been developed to support community‐based obesity prevention interventions. This paper presents a quantitative comparison between the Foresight obesity systems map and a community‐developed map of the drivers of obesity.MethodsVariables from a community‐developed map were coded against the thematic clusters defined in the Foresight … Show more

“…Analytical techniques were taken from the field of NA, which has been previously demonstrated as a tool to investigate important structural elements within causal diagrams, 23,24 and the DEMATEL, which is an established analytical technique for identifying important components within complex cause-and-effect systems. 25,26 Negative polarity causal connections were inverted before and after the DEMATEL method.…”

“…6 Whole-systems approaches (WSAs) are well placed to tackle the complex adaptive system of local environmental influences on overweight and obesity. 7 While acting within this system, programs adopting a WSA can also be understood as indivisible from the complex adaptive system. In comparison to traditional approaches which introduce predefined health interventions to targeted contexts or populations, we broadly characterize the working principles of a WSA as:…”

“…Obesity is defined as an excessive accumulation of body fat resulting from an imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure and is influenced by a multitude of biological, cultural, political, environmental and economic drivers 1 . Paediatric obesity is today a major worldwide concern due to its association with the development of early metabolic, physical and certain psychosocial comorbidities 2,3 but also since approximately 80% of adolescents with obesity will continue to have obesity into adulthood 4 .…”
