Comparing dermoscopy and histological examination of normal equine skin

Abstract: Although not ideal for visualizing many structures in the superficial dermis of healthy equine skin, dermoscopy allowed visualization of epidermal ridges, hair shafts in the infundibular portion of the hair follicles and sweat gland duct openings. Dermoscopy could potentially be useful in the evaluation of diseases affecting the sweat glands, epidermis and hair shaft.

“…Although a handful of published veterinary studies have assessed the use of videodermoscopy in cats, dogs and horses, this study represents the first to assess the use of a videodermatoscope in conjunction with an automated image analysis program to define hair follicle parameters of healthy dogs. The data presented here confirm that although limitations do exist, the TrichoScale Pro © software can readily provide sensitive measurements and which offer a multitude of benefits for veterinary trichoscopy in both clinical and research settings.…”

“…The combination of trichoscopy with automated image analysis programs has provided a means of rapid, user‐independent assessment of normal and pathological human hair follicle parameters . To the best of the authors' knowledge, only a handful of veterinary dermoscopy studies have been published, one of which compared trichoscopic findings between healthy dogs and those with various causes of canine noninflammatory alopecia. This study described a positive correlation between trichoscopic and histological findings …”

“…Over the last 70 years, human and mice hair follicles are extensively studied, and other animal models include pig, cattle, and sheep were also used to study hair follicle biology [ 7 ]. Although there are some studies on the horse skin [ 8 , 9 ], little is on horse hair follicle [ 10 , 11 ]. Understanding the hair growth, cycle, and melanogenesis in different parts of horse skin provides insights and valuable information for studying the regional specificity of hair follicles in other mammals.…”
