Comparing frugality and inclusion in innovation for development: logic, process and outcome

Abstract: This paper sheds light on two main concepts applied to innovation for development: frugal innovation and inclusive innovation. Researchers often conflate these concepts when classifying or characterizing innovative endeavours in developing contexts. We argue however that these concepts are fundamentally different based on their philosophical orientations, i.e. frugality versus social inclusion, their respective innovation processes and outcomes. Based on an in-depth literature review, we develop a typology out… Show more

“…Various concepts have been coined to describe different models of innovation with the potential to improve the well-being and freedom of marginalized communities [24]. Although these concepts have many overlaps, they do have significant theoretical differences that will be addressed in this section.…”

“…Another group of terms clarifies the inclusive and socially responsible objective of these types of innovation. Inclusive innovation generally designates initiatives focused on marginalized communities and impacts their livelihoods [24]. The most ambiguous concept in literature, often with multiple definitions, is that of social innovation.…”

“…This can happen by topping up the credit on their mobile phones, which they can use for money transfers, thanks to MPesa-type payment systems [4]. This is a typical frugal innovation, using a combination of existing technologies in an intelligent way [5]. This was possible because most farmers in Africa now have mobile phones.…”

“…InIn is the first conceptual pillar in this research. It is a promising concept, although it has been considered a fuzzy research field by several scholars (Onsongo & Knorringa, 2020;Chataway, Hanlin, & Kaplinsky, 2014;Opola, Klerkx, Leeuwis, & Kilelu, 2020;Patiño-Valencia, Villalba-Morales, Acosta-Amaya, Villegas-Arboleda, & Calderón-Sanín, 2020). Examples of this fuzzy situation include the broad set of possible definitions of this concept (See Table 1) and its lack of neutrality (Papaioannou, 2014) regarding its association with the approaches to development.…”
