Comparing Lumbar Lordosis in Functional Dance Positions in Collegiate Dancers With and Without Low Back Pain

Abstract: Limited research has explored the relationship between lumbar lordosis and incidence of low back pain in dancers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between lumbar lordosis in functional dance positions and low back pain (LBP). Thirty full-time undergraduate ballet and modern collegiate dancers (28 female, 2 male) from three university dance programs participated in this study. Functional lumbar lordosis, hip passive range of motion, and core endurance were measured in a single sessi… Show more

“…Skallerud et al examined the relationship between low back pain (LBP) and lumbar lordosis in functional dance positions (standing with feet parallel, first position, grand plié in second position, cambré, retiré from fifth position, développé à la seconde, and first arabesque) in twenty-eight female and two male collegiate dancers [135]. The study also investigated the associations of hip passive range of motion (PROM) and core stability with LBP.…”

“…The pathogenesis of low back pain in dancers is, however, multifactorial and remains non-specific [19,20]. Some studies suggest that low back pain in dancers may be linked to the postural adjustments resulting from dance practice [19,21,22]. This relationship is, however, poorly explored [21,22].…”

“…Some studies suggest that low back pain in dancers may be linked to the postural adjustments resulting from dance practice [19,21,22]. This relationship is, however, poorly explored [21,22]. We reviewed the literature, but we did not find any study that would conduct a comparative analysis of Polish folk and ballroom dancers, which was the inspiration to undertake this research.…”
