Comparing McMaster and Mini-FLOTAC for endoparasites diagnostic in goats

Abstract: The Brazil Northeast region has the higher goat national herd with the endoparasitosisas one of the main factors interfering in these productive chain. Aiming to compare diagnostic techniques to quantify goats endoparasites eggs and oocysts. Eggs and oocysts recovered from feces were identified from 45 goats, Capra aegagrus hircus, by counting eggs per gram of feces (EPG) McMaster (conversion factors 100x and 25x) and Mini-FLOTAC (conversion factors 5x and 10x… Show more

“…Several studies comparing the Mini-FLOTAC and the McMaster techniques have focused on strongyle egg counts. In ruminants, such comparisons have been performed on cattle samples ( Bosco et al., 2014 ; Dias de Castro et al., 2017 ; Paras et al., 2018 ; Amadesi et al., 2020 ; Elghryani et al., 2020 ), sheep samples ( Rinaldi et al., 2014 ; Kenyon et al., 2016 ; Bosco et al., 2018 ; Paras et al., 2018 ; Alowanou et al., 2021 ; Vieira et al., 2021 ), goat samples ( Silva et al., 2020 ; Alowanou et al., 2021 ; Vieira et al., 2021 ) and llama samples ( Paras et al., 2018 ). Eimeria spp.…”

“…This method for controlling parasitism in the face of anthelmintic resistance of nematodes has been validated for use in sheep and goats in the U.S., with strong correlation to fecal egg per gram count and packed cell volume. 4 Fecal egg counts (FEC) performed by the Mini-FLOTAC or McMaster's methods [5][6] are important to perform periodically as a more quantitative method of monitoring, as well as determine other parasite genera that may be circulating in the herd or flock. Remember, FAMACHA only detects anemia, which is produced by Hemonchus.…”
