Comparing the Effect of Two Educational Programs on the Quality of Life of Hemodialysis Patients in Iran

Abstract: Background:Various researchers have shown that the health level, performance status, and quality of life (QOL) are often less than expected especially in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Objectives:This study aimed to determine the effect of the two methods of educational programs on health- related QOL (HRQOL) in Iranian HD patients.Patients and Methods:In this quasi-experimental, pretest-posttest interventional study, we employed each subject as his/her own control. The study was conducted at the dialysis units in… Show more

“…The results of previous studies and the current study suggest the potential positive effects of the applied method such as absorption of multiple senses to the content, simple content, repeatability, ability of usage while in good physical, spiritual and mental environment. The study by Baraz et al showed that a videobased educational program increased the quality of life of patients on hemodialysis (35). Patients in the control group of the present study had limitations to exploit the advantages of various multimedia approaches and only attended one training session and thus had to save and preserve learned materials during a short period of time, therefore couldn't improve their self-care and ultimately quality of life.…”

“…In Avci study, the multimedia education leaded to increase breast self-examination (Avci et al, 2009). In several studies, the effectiveness of multimedia education in diabetic patients' quality of life (Boren et al, 2006;Noohi et al, 2011;Abumasoudi et al, 2015), patients with prostate cancer (Baraz et al, 2014) and patients under hemodialysis has approved. Moreover, in Hatefnia's study, the effectiveness of group education to perform mammography has been reported which is consistent with the current study (Hatefnia et al, 2010), but in Hajian's study, the group education could not lead to increase mammography which can be due to hold group education sessions as a lecture without group discussion (Hajian et al, 2011).…”

“…Another study by Ebrahimi and Sadeghi (2014) on 99 patients under hemodialysis showed that NEP leads to decreased levels of creatinine, sodium, potassium, phosphor, calcium, and albumen (25). Baraz et al (2014) also investigated the effect of education on biochemical parameters of 63 patients under hemodialysis in 2 groups of oral and visual educations. In this study, oral education led to a significant decrease in creatinine, phosphate, uric acid, and blood urea nitrogen, but no significant effect was found in other parameters such as albumen, calcium, and potassium (23).…”

“…The most important health care purposes for patients under hemodialysis are to prevent malnutrition and have suitable nutrition to delay renal osteodystrophy by controlling serum calcium and phosphor; and finally, to encourage the patients to use appropriate nutrition (3,9). Therefore, these patients need special and continuous ed- ucation (10).…”
