Comparing the performance of traditional non-treponemal tests on syphilis and non-syphilis serum samples

Abstract: The goal of the present study was to determine the performance of two traditional non-treponemal tests for syphilis. Syphilis sera (n = 209) included different stages of disease, and control sera (n = 247) were from patients with tumours, leprosy, systemic lupus erythematosus, hepatitis, pregnant women and healthy individuals. Treponema pallidum ELISA, Treponema pallidum particle agglutination and rapid treponema-specific tests were used as gold standards. Rapid plasma reagin or toluidine red unheated serum te… Show more

“…The MSM in our study were younger and more highly educated compared to non-online gay men [10]. However, national data [22] suggest that young gay men do carry a disproportionate burden of syphilis and HIV. A second limitation in our study is that all measured behaviors were based on self-report, and could thus be influenced by social desirability reporting bias.…”

“…The dual non-treponemal/treponemal RT might help elucidate these cases and in the treatment initiation decision-making. Most studies conclude that dual detection of non-treponemal and treponemal antibodies can help detect syphilis cases in resource-limited settings while substantially reducing overtreatment rates 15 , 16 but the major limitation of this dual non-treponemal/treponemal RT is its low sensitivity shown for low-titre non-treponemal antibodies 16 18 . High sensitivity (98.8%) of this particular RT was observed in a recent study comparing to VDRL tests but limitations were that all tests were performed on serum samples and inside conventional laboratory and no biological false-positive samples were tested 19 .…”

“…First, we only recruited online gay men who tend to be younger and more highly educated 19 compared to non-online gay men in China. However, national data 20 suggest that young gay men have a disproportionate burden of syphilis and HIV. Second, all the behaviors measured in our study were based on self-report.…”
