Comparing the quality of pro- and anti-vaccination online information: a content analysis of vaccination-related webpages

Abstract: BackgroundThe exponential increase in health-related online platforms has made the Internet one of the main sources of health information globally. The quality of health contents disseminated on the Internet has been a central focus for many researchers. To date, however, few comparative content analyses of pro- and anti-vaccination websites have been conducted, and none of them compared the quality of information. The main objective of this study was therefore to bring new evidence on this aspect by comparing… Show more

“…Previous research examining this type of information, concerning vaccines, demonstrated that many blog posts and subsequent comments take an anti-vaccination standpoint although the overall quality of pro-vaccination webpages is superior to anti-vaccination online sources. “…A previous study by Wolfe and Sharp assessed the pro- or anti-vaccine stance of parental internet search results for immunisation information overseas [6] and found that the search terms and search engine used had a bearing on the amount of pro- or anti- vaccination material returned by the search, and the order in which they were presented. Another study by Sak et al compared the quality of pro- and anti-vaccine web sites, but the sample was not intended to be representative of what a typical parent would see when searching [7]. Finally, a previous unpublished study examined online information available in 2007 [8].…”

“…Apesar da facilidade em obter múltiplas informações, muitos adolescentes possuem déficit de conhecimento sobre cuidados com a saúde, falta de comunicação adequada com os pais, além das informações recebidas e/ou acessadas na internet de maneira distorcida, impactando nas suas atitudes (29). Compete à equipe de saúde e é papel da Enfermagem (profissional responsável pela sala de vacina) investir em prevenção de riscos e agravos por meio de ações educativas em saúde.…”
