Comparing ultrasound-guided and fiberscope-guided intubation

Abstract: with any intubation technique are critical for its successful use in clinical practice. In a randomized controlled trial, care is required to ensure that the operators are equally proficient with the studied techniques to avoid bias [2]. We are concerned that the results of this study, such as differences in the first-attempt success rate between groups, may denote different learning curves of operators for the techniques studied, rather than the actual efficiency of these techniques. Compliance with ethical s… Show more

“…I agree with Wang et al [1] that the experience in ultrasound-guided tracheal intubation is critical for its success. The operator in the ultrasound group has been stated to have 7 years of experience in the application of ultrasound in the airway and the intensive care including confirmation of tracheal intubation.…”

“…To the Editor: I would like to thank Wang et al [1] for their interest in our study comparing the fiberscope and the ultrasound guided techniques for tracheal intubation in patients with cervical spine immobilization. Actually, in the technique described in the study, the rigid neck collar was removed before tracheal intubation to shape the tracheal tube mounted over the stylet according to the previous lateral view X-ray taken in the neutral position.…”

“…Sixthly, it is worth mentioning that experience and capability are critical to the successful of any techniques in clinical application. In terms of the possible bias in a randomized controlled trial, the operators must be able to be proficient in the techniques studied [13], even all of the tracheal intubation in this study were performed by a specified anesthesiologist who were skilled in using the ultrasound and SOS in tracheal intubation. Finally, this study was performed in a single center on a relatively small number of patients and the results need to be confirmed by multicenter studies.…”
