Comparison between autologous noncultured extracted hair follicle outer root sheath cell suspension and autologous noncultured epidermal cell suspension in the treatment of stable vitiligo: a randomized study

Abstract: SummaryBackground Vitiligo is an acquired disorder of pigmentation caused by loss of epidermal melanocytes. Autologous noncultured epidermal cell suspension (NCES) and autologous noncultured extracted hair follicle outer root sheath cell suspension (NCORSHFS) are important surgical modalities for the treatment of stable vitiligo. Objectives To compare NCES and NCORSHFS for producing repigmentation in stable vitiligo. Methods We randomized 30 patients with 47 stable vitiligo lesions into two groups. Patients in… Show more

“…The statistical analysis was carried out using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA, version 16.0 for Windows). The sample size was estimated based on a previous study that showed excellent (>90%) repigmentation of 83% vs. 65% . Our sample size came out to be 30 lesions per group at a power of 80% and confidence interval of 95%.…”

“…Autologous non‐cultured epidermal cell suspension (NCES) is a successful surgical method in vitiligo . However, the procedure needs a research laboratory with equipments like centrifuge machine and laminar flow.…”

“…In addition, non-cultured epidermal suspension and outer root sheath (ORS) cells from extracted hairs showed statistically similar clinical repigmentation results in patients with stable vitiligo, indicating that epidermal melanocytes and follicular MelSCs may have similar effects [103] . However these modalities are mixtures of various cells, thus we cannot define the effect of MelSCs or melanocytes only.…”

“…The use of CM is commonly reported in MKTP publications. 3,4 Petrolatum-impregnated gauze (PG), a less expensive, alternative low-absorptive-capacity dressing, may offer similar outcomes to CM. With this understanding, we designed a study to evaluate repigmentation and the applicability of both recipient-site preparation techniques (dermabrasion vs. FCO 2 ) and basal dressing compositions (CM vs. PG).…”
