Comparison between numerical and analytical methods of AC resistance evaluation for Medium Frequency Transformers: Validation on a prototype

Abstract: In the future, Medium Frequency Transformers (MFT with a frequency range 5 kHz to 100 kHz) will be major components in DC-DC converter applications, for both Medium Voltage Direct Current (MVDC) and High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) networks. Importantly, the corresponding power losses should be accurately calculated in order to reach performance targets (very high efficiency). This paper reviews the most known analytical models which are used to calculate the medium frequency resistance for several winding t… Show more

“…The details of the transformer design are given in [17]. Because of the short development time, the magnetic material is chosen a priori: among the possible candidates [18], ferrite is selected because of its availability, despite its low maximum induction level (≈ 0.2 T).…”

“…The copper losses in the winding are estimated using Dowell's equations [19]. These equations consider the current harmonics and estimate the AC resistance of the winding taking into account proximity and skin effects in the conductors [17]. Foil winding is preferred because of its lower cost, lower AC resistance compared to wire, and because it is well suited to the small number of turns being considered here (2 windings with 14 turns per column).…”

“…It was connected to the metal support of the MFT, itself connected to the ground of the DC-DC converter. The goal was to reduce the parasitic capacitance between the primary and the secondary and to 6 5 6 5 More details on the differences between the measurement and the calculations are given in [11].…”

“…In those conditions, the "hot-spot" measurements levels were ~ 55 °C on the coils and ~ 40 °C on the magnetic circuit. The measurements were compared with the calculation results including two methods of calculating the copper losses: magnetic 3D on the one hand and analytic (Dowel [13]) on the other hand [11].…”

“…The controlled heat transfer mechanism in the mini and millimeter channels is thought to be the evaporation of the thin liquid film around the bubbles in the micro-channels (Chen, et al, 2013;Mersen, 2017). There are several general literature reviews of one-dimensional and two-dimensional FC-72 flow boiling and heat transfer, depending on channel geometry (Pereira et al, 2017;Ansys, 2017;Kivisalu et al, 2014;Naik, et al2014).…”
