Comparison of Accelerated and Rapid Schedules for Monovalent Hepatitis B and Combined Hepatitis a/B Vaccines in Children With Cancer

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the efficacy of immunization against hepatitis A and B infections with "rapid" or "accelerated" schedules in children with cancer receiving chemotherapy. Fifty-one children were recruited to receive either vaccination schedule, in the "rapid vaccination schedule"; hepatitis B (group I) or combined hepatitis A/B vaccines (group III) were administered at months 0, 1, 2, and 12; in the "accelerated vaccination schedule," hepatitis B (group II) or combined hepatitis A/B (grou… Show more

“…In general, during chemotherapy, vaccines containing inactivated organisms or purified antigens are not contraindicated [81][82][83][84][85][86][87][88]. In contrast, vaccination with live attenuated viruses are contraindicated to avoid risks of vaccination disease and/or for lack of data of effectiveness [89,90].…”

“…A super-accelerated vaccination scheme was designed based on the previous reports of significant acute and long-term protective antibody levels following multiple, double doses of vaccination during chemotherapy in children with cancer. 14 ,15, 16 Three doses (at days 0-5, 8-12, and 28-33) of booster recombinant HBV vaccines (Engerix-B, GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals Limited) were administered to children with cancer who were HBV seronegative (negative for HBsAg and anti-HBs Ab) at diagnosis.…”
