“…The acellular and whole-cell vaccines used in this and our previous study contained the same quantity of diphtheria and tetanus toxoids but induced dierent antibody responses. A number of other investigators have demonstrated lower antitoxoid responses following immunisation with DTaP vaccines [3,7,9,19,22,30,33,35,36], but others have found similar or higher responses with acellular products, particularly those with a greater content of diphtheria or tetanus toxoid [13,17,21]. Our results taken with those of others suggest that combining diphtheria and tetanus toxoids with acellular rather than whole-cell vaccines results in a modest reduction in immunogenicity.…”

“…The acellular vaccines were much less likely to cause reactions than the whole-cell vaccine, as shown previously. [24][25][26][27] The same pattern was observed in an Italian trial, reported in this issue of the Journal, which used the same wholecell vaccine, two three-component vaccines, and a different DT-vaccine control. 28 A temperature of 40.5°C or higher and convulsions are contraindications for additional doses of whole-cell vaccine, and the 1994 Red Book 29 advises physicians to consider carefully an individual patient's history before vaccination.…”

“…The acellular pertussis vaccine is immunogenic and is effective in preventing pertussis but less reactogenic than the wP vaccine [ 19 ]. However, compared with the best wP vaccines, aP vaccines are not as effective in mass immunization programs [ 5 , 20 ].…”
