Comparison of acoustic properties between natural and synthetic α-quartz crystals

Abstract: Accurate measurements of bulk and leaky surface acoustic wave (LSAW) velocities of natural α-quartz crystal were carried out using the line-focus-beam and plane-wave ultrasonic material characterization systems and then these measured velocities were compared with the velocities of synthetic α-quartz crystals. Longitudinal velocities of principal X-, Y-, and Z-cut specimens; shear velocities with X-axis polarized particle displacements of the Y- and Z-cut specimens; and LSAW velocities for these three specimen… Show more

“…We have been studying the development and application of a line-focus-beam ultrasonic material-characterization (LFB-UMC) system having the advantage of highly accurate, nondestructive, and nocontact measurement of the acoustic properties, viz., phase velocity and attenuation, of Rayleigh-type leaky surface acoustic waves (LSAWs) that are excited and propagated on a water-loaded specimen surface. 8,9) We have established methods of investigating scientific and industrial problems associated with acoustic properties for piezoelectric crystals such as LiNbO 3 , LiTaO 3 , and -quartz [10][11][12][13] as well as thermal properties of ultra-low expansion TiO 2 -SiO 2 glass. 14) Resistivity is well known to influence acoustic properties through the piezoelectricity in a piezoelectric semiconducting medium.…”

“…II, and the ultrasonic wave velocity V L and V S is calculated after length correction. The ultrasonic wave velocity in first line is at zero pressure experimental data of Kushibiki and Ohtagawa, 24 and the second line data are the extrapolating value to zero pressure of ultrasonic wave velocities under high pressure of this study. The two results are consistent with each other very well.…”

“…According to Eq. ( 6), if θ(z) = cos(k t z) and [34], where k t = Ω/c t and the exact acoustic velocity c t depends on the cutting direction of this suspended beam [64,65]. In order to research quantum physics in longer macroscopic scale, we can increase the length L from 0.1mm to 1cm, e.g.…”
