Comparison of Agility and Dynamic Balance in Elderly Women with Endomorphic Mesomorph Somatotype with Presence or Absence of Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract: SUMMARY:Physical function declines in efficiency with advancing age, contributing to disability. Furthermore, metabolic syndrome is a common illness in elderly populations, somatotayping is a technique for description of the physique and can establish a relation with performance and pathology. The aim of this work was to compare the agility, dynamic balance in elderly women with endomorphic mesomorph somatotype with presence or absence of metabolic syndrome. A sample of 18 volunteers was obtained (age 66.5±4.7… Show more

“…In stratified analysis, we found that the association between MetS and TUG was independent of depressive mood, 27 . A study conducted on 18 elderly women aged > 60 years reported that TUG times of women with MetS was longer than that of women without MetS 28 , and another study of 28 elderly women also showed a similar result 29 . The findings from the current study is consistent with the results of studies that investigated the association between MetS and TUG results.…”

“…Several studies examined the association of physical function with CV-related risk factors. These studies reported that MetS or some of its features or insulin resistance was associated with a decline in physical function [25][26][27][28][29] . Three such studies used TUG test as a measure of physical function [27][28][29] .…”

“…Body composition is affected by the daily physical activities and vice-versa [4]. The three different body types are ectomorph, endomorph (which expresses body fat content), and mesomorph [13]. As abdominal obesity increases, a compensatory arch is created in the lumbar curve with the increase of the lumbar arch, the center of gravity shifts forward, causing changes in walking, postural control disorders, more falling, and reduced motor mobility [14].…”

“…As abdominal obesity increases, a compensatory arch is created in the lumbar curve with the increase of the lumbar arch, the center of gravity shifts forward, causing changes in walking, postural control disorders, more falling, and reduced motor mobility [14]. Researchers have mentioned that the length of step, Range of Motion (ROM) and balance are affected by body type [13,15,16]. In a study conducted by Cao et al it was mentioned that regular physical activity and exercise can effectively decrease the risk of falling and promote the mobility and safety movements in the old women [17].…”

“…These effects result in an unbalance of motricity, becoming more weak (Guzmán et al, 2011;Ochoa-Martínez et al, 2012), predisposing the elderly to have lower functional autonomy in activities of daily living such as walking, climbing stairs, or rising from a chair without the help of a person or device (Molt & McAuley, 2010;Behpoor et al, 2011).…”
