Comparison of an oscillating/rotating electric toothbrush and a ‘sonic’ toothbrush in plaque‐removing ability

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to compare the Braun/Oral-B Plak Control (D7) and Sonicare (S) in their plaque-removing efficacy. For this study, 35 university students (non-dental) were selected. This was a 2-part study. Prior to each appointment, all subjects were asked to abstain from all oral hygiene procedures for at least 24 h. In Part 1, the efficacy of the toothbrush was studied when one of the investigators brushed the teeth of the panellists. In Part 2, the efficacy of toothbrushing was studied … Show more

“…With the exception of two comparisons 51 , 58 that used a cross‐over design, all other included studies were RCTs and had a parallel design. Four comparisons 48 , 53 , 54 , 57 utilized a split‐mouth method in which one comparison 48 selected two contralateral quadrants and the other three comparisons 53 , 54 , 57 divided the dentitions into the left and the right side. The total study duration varied from 30 days to 6 months.…”

“…The study demonstrated that the tested oscillation rotation powered toothbrush, which was a Braun (or Oral-B Plak Control) toothbrush, had higher efficacy in plaque removal than the sonic-powered ones [65].…”

“…7 It has also been shown that they may reach the dental biofilm installed in areas of difficult access, without causing any harm either on the hard and soft oral tissues. 8 Indeed, gingival stability was observed with the use of sonic toothbrushes over a 12-month period, whereas recessions increased with the use of manual toothbrushes. 9 In addition, sonic toothbrushes allowed better control of brushing forces and showed less dentinal abrasion compared to manual toothbrushes.…”
