Comparison of cervical muscle thickness between asymptomatic women with and without forward head posture

Abstract: HighlightsForward head posture (FHP) is a prevalent poor posture in patients with neck disorders. We compared the thickness of the cervical muscles in women with and without FHP.Women with FHP had significantly greater thickness of the sternocleidomastoid muscle.

“…An increased forward head distance was observed at school age, which indicates a forward positioning (forward head). With forward head, it is possible to observe disuse of the deep cervical flexor muscle and dominance of the superficial cervical flexor, such as the sternocleidomastoid muscle (SCM), tonic contraction of the SCM, sustained cervical flexion movements and shortening of this muscle 23 . The difference found in head positioning between preschool and school age can be explained as normal postural alteration from musculoskeletal maturation but can be aggravated by the weight of schoolchildren's backpacks 6 and daily postural habits such as long periods of sitting in an inappropriate position during classes and activities at home, which produce inappropriate head, shoulder and spinal posture 24,25 .…”

“…By the study conducted by Han et al [11], the exact procedure was not presented. In 1 study [16], muscle activity was not studied directly. Instead, changes in the thickness of muscle fibers were studied.…”

“…However, most of the earlier researches have been limited to the evaluation of the functional level and muscular strength and activity in subjects with FHP, discovering how much the movement and pain influence patients with FHP [24][25][26][27] or is it feasible to use the CVA to predict the incidence of pain [28]. To date, there was no study examining the effect of FHP and RSP on hand grip strength.…”
